[Q] What is this?
[A] The McSweeney's Reading Group is a gathering of very fine folks who enjoy funny, quirky, stirring, thought-provoking, original writing, lively discussion and good-natured debate. We're working our way through the books published by McSweeney's Press and/or writers associated with McSweeney's somehow, someway.

[Q] Who can play along?
[A] Nice friendly people with a slightly sarcastic bent are certainly invited. As are funny folks with an interest in fine writing (and precision-point layout). The politely curious are welcome as well. Really, anyone not outright insulting is invited for at least one meeting.

[Q] When are the meetings?
[A] We're just getting going, so meetings are still on a bit of an irregular schedule. The May meeting has at long last been scheduled for June 3, 2002. That's a Monday evening from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.

[Q] Where are the meetings?
[A] The brave folks at Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Lexington store, have graciously offered in-store meeting space. We'll try meeting in the cafe and see how just well we mix dining, drinking and discussing.

[Q] What do I need to bring to the meetings?
[A] The book is a good place to start (see the next question below). Beyond that just bring a keen interest, willingness to talk (but not dominate) and perhaps a friend.

[Q] Are there financial incentives?
[A] Mention the McSweeney's Reading Group when buying the current selection from Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Lexington, and receive a 10% discount!

[Q] Why start a McSweeney's Reading Group?
[A]
Well, it all started with McSweeney's #6 . . .

(artistic license begins here)

Finally, it had arrived! That much-anticipated mix of Dave Eggers, They Might Be Giants, et al, in our hot little hands. Flushed with excitement (in a cute way), we were eager to share our joy with friends. A small festive gathering was clearly in order.

Wearied by repeated unsolicited readings from various things McSweeney's, friends arrived (nonetheless) bearing sincerely feigned interest and bottles of wines. Lots of wine. A brave and loyal and slightly sotted lot.

Shortly into the evening the truth emerged -- they didn't get it. They just didn't see what we see. But not for lack of trying. Truly. And now the thrusting of books with many flagged pages into their patiently accepting hands had to stop. sigh... What were we to do?
